Right to Object
Definition
A data subject right under GDPR Article 21 enabling individuals to object to processing of their personal data in specific circumstances. For processing based on legitimate interests or public interest tasks, individuals have an absolute right to object to direct marketing (including profiling for marketing). For other processing, individuals can object 'on grounds relating to their particular situation,' and organizations must cease processing unless they demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds overriding the individual's interests or need the data for legal claims. Scientific/historical research and statistics processing can be objected to unless necessary for public interest tasks. When individuals exercise objection rights, organizations must stop processing (if no overriding grounds exist), consider whether alternative legal bases apply, and document decisions. The right to object is distinct from consent withdrawal—it applies to processing based on legitimate interests or public tasks, not consent. Organizations should make objection rights prominent, especially for direct marketing, and implement straightforward objection processes.
