Cookie Preferences
Definition
User settings that control which cookies a website can place on their device, typically managed through a cookie consent banner or preference center. Cookie preference interfaces allow users to accept or reject cookies by category—such as necessary, functional, analytics, and advertising—or sometimes at an individual cookie level. Once set, preferences should be respected across all pages of the website and ideally remembered for future visits. Users should be able to easily access and change their cookie preferences at any time, typically through a link in the website footer or privacy settings. Privacy laws require that websites honor cookie preferences and not use non-essential cookies until consent is given. Global privacy signals like Global Privacy Control can automatically communicate cookie preferences. Good cookie preference management makes it as easy to reject cookies as to accept them, avoiding dark patterns that nudge users toward accepting everything.
